We left on April 1st for our first big vacation with Dawson to Maui and we were really nervous about how he was going to be on the flight over there, since it's almost 7 hours long. He was actually really good for the most part, and played with his books and toys the majority of the time. Our neighbor Gaylynn gave us some Dum Dums for him to suck on, which distracted him for quite awhile. Scott was able to get some buddy passes from a Delta pilot so we didn't have to pay for the flight, but we almost didn't make it on the plane because it was so full. Scott's parents also came with us so we rented a two bedroom condo in Wailea that was really close to the beach. We had a blast hanging out at the beach, the pool and driving around the island. It looks like Dawson is going to be a fish like his daddy because he loved playing in the ocean and the pool. He also liked to crawl up and down the beach and ate A LOT of sand, which was hilarious to see but also really messy to clean up afterward. We're STILL trying to get all of the sand out of his ears.
We also took a day to visit my parents in Oahu and we had a great time with them. They are currently on a mission there and they absolutely love it. My dad teaches religion classes at BYU Hawaii and my mom works on the campus as well. They also help out at the Polynesian Cultural Center one night a week. They took us to a lot of beautiful places on the island and showed us around the BYU campus and the Laie Temple.
We had planned on flying back to Utah on Tuesday night (April 8th) but with the two big airline closures that happened while we were there (Aloha Airlines and ATA), we found out that we wouldn't be able to get home flying on Delta until the end of the month(!) Scott's parents were able to get home with no problems since they weren't flying standby. We called the other airlines when we got back to our condo and were finally able to book a flight for Thursday night (the 10th) with United, which cost more one way than our entire trip would have cost if we had bought tickets through Delta instead of flying standby. We had to catch the flight out of Oahu so we flew to Oahu on Wednesday morning and my mom picked us up from the airport to stay with them until we were able to fly home. It was so nice to be able to spend a little more time with them and we were lucky that they had an extra bedroom we could stay in while we were there. My mom and I went to a temple session on Thursday morning while Scott watched Dawson and my dad was teaching one of his classes. We also took my parents to a nice restaurant and had some great seafood. I'm really glad we got to spend some extra time with them, since they won't be home for another year.
We had such a good time with both sets of parents, and we would definitely like to go to Maui again sometime. Dawson was really good the whole time we were there and he was also good on all of the flights we had to take (6 total!). We got home late Friday morning and we sure were happy to finally get there. I think going on vacation makes you really appreciate being able to come home.
Dawson was so friendly to everyone we met in Hawaii, and he got a lot of attention while we were there but some of the things people said about him were pretty funny. One couple called him a "tank" because they thought he was so big, a waitress told us: "He gotta lot of bacon on him", and a guy at the airport said: "Boy, that dude's got a big head." He still knows we think he's the cutest thing ever regardless of what other people said about him.
The first pic is of Dawson taking his first shower with Daddy in Hawaii, the second is of Scott and Dawson on the beach (notice the sand all over his face), the third is of the three of us in the pool at the condo and the fourth is of us by a gigantic banyan tree in Old Lahaina.
